The Shepherd LA Cooperative (SLAC)

IMG_4603

The Shepherd LA Cooperative (SLAC) is a particular initiative to identify, connect, and resource 13 likeminded Los Angeles pastors. These pastors affirm the foundation documents, clearly state their particular ecclesiological convictions (where we disagree), and have committed to connect for a lunch once a month.

Cooperative: a jointly owned enterprise engaging in the production or distribution of goods or the supplying of services, operated by its members for their mutual benefit, typically organized by consumers or farmers. Also called co-op.

The Shepherd LA Cooperative (SLAC) is not the only thing Shepherd LA initiates to connect and resource pastors, but it is probably the heart of it. Shepherd LA seeks to bless other LA pastors with friendship, support, encouragement, books, articles, podcasts, and various gatherings as the Lord leads.

These 21 LA pastors all affirm the foundation statements of Shepherd LA (T4G Affirmations/Denials and 9 Marks of a Healthy Church). But they disagree on many things and we want to keep those clear as we seek to persuade each other toward consistency and faithfulness through biblical and theological thinking. Our important differences are in 4 areas:

LOCAL CHURCH RELATIONS: (1) connectional presbyterianism, (2) connectional episcopalianism, (3) church autonomy

BAPTISM BELIEF AND PRACTICE: (1) paedobaptist; (2) credobaptist

FINAL DECISIVE CHURCH AUTHORITY TO (1) CONFESS FAITH AND (2) RECEIVE/REMOVE MEMBERS AND LEADERS: (1) elder-rule; (2) congregational

COMMUNION POSITIONS: (1) open to self-professed believers;  (2) closed-ish to those paedo/credo-baptized; (3) closed-ish to those credo-baptized; (4) closed-ish to those paedo/credo-baptized and a member of a gospel-preaching church; (5) closed-ish to those credo-baptized and a member of a gospel-preaching church; (6) closed to members only
